RENEGADES ROLLING TO TITLE

The S&K Renegades moved to within one game of the Tuesday Night Slo-pitch league Championship with a17-7 victory over Collins & Aikman on Thursday night. The Renegades reached the final by sweeping the series from Gledhill and the Special Ks. Similarly, Collins & Aikman ousted the Hitmen and SNAFU.

In Thursday night's action, the Renegades struck early when Bob Barta walloped a Dave Bently offering over the left field fence, scoring Harry MacNeil and Steve Baskette, who had reached base. The Renegades scored two more in the second and third, but Collins & Aikman tallied two of their own in the bottom of the third and closed the gap in the fourth when Rudy Lapointe opened with a solid single and then moved to third on Paul Nancekivell's hit. Albert Taylor then knocked in a run and Nancekivell and Taylor scored on Pat Baskette's rap to right field. The teams shut down each other's offence through the middle innings and the score stood at 7-5 in favour of the Renegades at the end of six innings.

The Renegades rallied for three more in the top of the seventh with doubles by Barta, Mike Gregory and Ken Bendall. Collins & Aikman replied with two of their own in the bottom of the eighth when Ken Racey rapped a hit to right field and moved to second on Taylor's single. Pat Baskette's single to right scored both runs and Collins & Aikman appeared to be poised for a comeback victory.

However, the Renegades sent 11 men to the plate in the ninth and, keyed by a Colin Slimmon double, the Renegades scored seven times in the inning. Collins & Aikman battled back, but Mike Gregory's magic at third base stalled the comeback attempt. The Renegades rapped out 24 hits in the contest. Collins & Aikman had 16 hits. The two teams will meet each other on Tuesday, September 13.

The league will host an Awards Banquet and Dance on Saturday, October 1 at the Ingersoll District Memorial Centre.

RENEGADES CAPTURE PLAYOFF CHAMPIONSHIP

The S&K Renegades capped a banner season with a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Collins and Aikman in game 3 of a best-of-five series. The Renegades were undefeated throughout the playoffs, sweeping all three series they played in.

In the final game, Collins and Aikman struck early with two runs in the top of the first. Jim Murray reached first on a Renegade error and moved to third on a single by Pat Baskette. Both runs scored on a booming double by Paul Nancekivell. Ed Francis, the Renegade hurler, then took charge and quelled the uprising by getting Ken Racey and Albert Taylor to fly out.

The Renegades bounced right back, in championship style, with two of their own in the bottom of the first. John Condos and Steve Baskette had back-to-back singles and, with two out, Colin Slimmon delivered a clutch two run single to right.

Collins and Aikman took the lead in the fourth when Jim Murray singled and scored on a double by, the always dangerous, Pat Baskette. They added one more in the fifth when Albert Taylor scored on singles by Mike Moran and Randy McWebb.

In the sixth inning, Collins and Aikman padded their lead as they rallied for two more runs and appeared poised for their first victory in the series. The Renegade bats which had been relatively silent since the first frame, came to life in the bottom of the eighth when Dan Engel powered a one and one offering into the left field bleachers, scoring Don Pembleton, who had reached first on an earlier single.

In the ninth, Collins and Aikman were held scoreless, but still very much in control as they headed to the bottom of the ninth with a two run lead. But it wasn't to be as Bob Barta singled and moved to third on an Ed Francis shot to right.
